Course Overview: Introduction to British Sign Language (BSL), Communication and Deaf Awareness

This introductory course offers a foundational understanding of British Sign Language (BSL) and explores key aspects of communication and Deaf awareness. Participants will gain insight into the experiences of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, including the barriers they may face and the range of communication support options and technologies available to promote inclusion.

Course content includes:

• An introduction to Deaf culture and communication needs
• Overview of assistive technologies and communication support (e.g., hearing loops, BSL interpreters, speech-to-text apps)
• Basic BSL signs for:
  • Greetings
  • Asking and responding to “How are you?”
  • The BSL alphabet

This course is ideal for anyone looking to build confidence in communicating inclusively and respectfully with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals.
