The POA’s Wulf project has been collaborating with the deaf studies team at Grwp Llandrillo Menai to offer a series of BSL taster sessions.

Following a successful 24/25 rollout, we are now looking to add further dates to the schedule.

This three-hour BSL taster session will equip individuals with the confidence and understanding allowing then to be able to hold a basic conversation with a Deaf person using British Sign Language, including greeting and asking for personal details such as name, age, phone number, date/time, and place of residence.

The difficulties for many who would like to continue their BSL learning, is the time required. In most circumstances the course would be delivered by a local further education college, and the level 1 qualification takes approx. 66 hours divided into 22 weekly sessions. This is beyond the ability of many interested individuals to be able to commit, to and so we have been exploring the possibility of providing something that builds on the foundations of the BSL taster sessions, whilst delivering a platform to further develop personal BSL skills without the longer commitment required by the level 1 qualification.

In the future hope to be able to offer a short unaccredited learning opportunity that requires around 8 hours of the individuals time, which would be divided into two half day sessions. We hope that from among those who attend the BSL taster sessions we will be able to gather a cohort of interested individuals willing and able to commit to this amount of time, helping to bring this potential option to fruition.
