The WULF project can assist interested individuals who wish to study courses and qualification that help with personal and career development. We work with the Skills Network and other providers to be able to offer these courses.

This offer is not restricted to POA members but is open to anyone working in or for His Majesties Prison and Probation service in Wales, or who lives in Wales and works for the service elsewhere.

Distance learning refers to a method of study that does not require you to attend a classroom-based session. The learner can access the course at their home or with agreement with their employer, access the course from the workplace. There is no direct tutor input. Similar in style to an NVQ the course provides information for the student to read and consider, then using the knowledge they have acquired they answer a series of assessment questions, these are compiled into a unit and submitted for assessment. The assessor’s role is to ensure that the students submission reaches the required standard that demonstrates a satisfactory understanding has been achieved. Where required the assessor may ask the student to either answer further questions or provide additional information to ensure that the required standard has been met. They will also provide detailed feedback to clarify and reinforce the students grasp of the information.

The course provider will on enrolment supply the student with a timetable for submission of course work. If required, the student can contact the provider to request that the submission dates be amended to allow them additional time to complete their work.

Many highly motivated and self-disciplined learners prefer distance educational programmes as it affords you the flexibility of learning from any place at any time. Eliminating the need to travel and of course distance learning is accessible to those living with disability or geographic constraints, for example.

There are a wide range of courses to choose from, you can only study one course at a time, but having completed a course you can of course apply for another.

Whilst the courses are provided without cost to the individual, they are not free, and the individual will be entering an agreement in which they contract to complete the course and accept that failure to do so without adequate reason or mitigation will potentially leave them with a liability for the course fees.
